“The IPCC’s Working Group II Report is a sobering assessment for the world today. Human-induced climate change continues to present a significant and widespread risk for nature and people, both today and in the future. The latest projections stress even more that unsustainable development patterns are increasing exposure of ecosystems and people to climate hazards, concluding the world is not on track to meet the 1.5°C target for global warming by 2050.
Successful mass-scale emissions reduction programmes are absolutely essential to address this shortcoming. However there are areas that are prohibitively expensive or impossible to decarbonise in enough time. To mitigate the worst impacts of climate change, we must also accelerate the scale-up and roll out of negative emissions technologies (NETs) that will remove greenhouse gas emissions; actually reversing the current course.
By complementing emission reductions with the integration of Negative Emission Technologies, we can take a step towards the near-term actions that limit global warming to close to 1.5°C, accelerating the point when Net Zero is achievable, and substantially reduce projected losses and damages related to climate change in human systems and ecosystems.”
